Who ever knew doing the dishes would be the highlight of my day? As food disappears from the tables and dinner is coming to a close we are all called to duty. “Dish crew one let’s get it done,” with only a few words we, the seven members of dish crew one, know it is time to prepare ourselves. You can never be quite sure what awaits you in the dish room. Stacked sixty high plates, cups, spoons, and forks litter the counter of the dish room. To some this setting would be daunting, intimidating, but not for dish crew one, not at Chewonki. Seven strong, we each take our positions behind the counters, waiting for the careful dance of pots and pans to begin. Then, as if a switch is flipped, we are in action, pulling trays into place, swinging them around to the magic eighth member of our crew, the Hobart. From the Hobart four hands wait in anticipation to bring the dishes to their final resting place for the night in the kitchen.
What might be confused as a cacophony is rather a symphony of clinking dishes to my ears. The exchanges between hands are so perfectly choreographed now with weeks of experience under our belts and within twenty minutes or so the piles have been completely diminished. However, there is still work to be done. Squeegees paint back and forth across the counter collecting the soapy water to reveal a clean shiny surface that was hiding underneath. Doing dishes is really an art and I ask anyone who says otherwise to spend an evening in the dish room with dish crew one.
Dish crew is anything but a chore and I am so proud to be a member of my dish crew. It continues to surprise me every time I look back at my days here at Chewonki how many wonderful memories were made within the four walls of the dish room, from singing along to someones music to making our own with the pots and pans like children playing on the kitchen floor. I will never forget these moments and never again will I look at dishes as some ominous task but rather as an opportunity to have a little fun!
