After a difficult week preparing for Mid-term evaluations, I’m sure all of our semester appreciated our 5 day trip to 4th Debsconeag Lake. After a four hour drive from Wiscasset, we arrived in the beautiful wilderness late Wednesday afternoon. After settling into our yurts, and timidly eating dinner in the new Log Cabin dining area, we went to sleep that night not knowing what to expect from the next couple of days. Over the next three days, we really made use of our time, partaking in activities like canoeing around the lake, learning wilderness first aid techniques, hiking around the area, and of course taking in the gorgeous views. Through these shared experiences, everybody got to interact with other members of the community who they might not have known quite as well. Despite some poor weather and difficult hikes, everybody really enjoyed themselves, and really benefitted from their time on the Lake. Perhaps the most unforgettable moment from the entire moment was our last night. Huddled around the campfire, we all listened to each other perform through musical performances, funny skits, and poetry recitations. After this ‘coffeehouse’ we realized that we had officially reached the half-way point of our semester, and took the rest of the time to reflect on our experiences at Chewonki thus far. Although it’s only been a couple months, I feel like I’ve known my peers here for years already. We all look forward to the final half of our Chewonki Semester School experience, and all the experiences still to come.
