Each week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays we participate in work program for two hours in the afternoon. On both Tuesdays and Thursdays half of the semester participates in this while the other group is on their Science Field Trip, and on Friday’s the entire semester has work program together. These times are an opportunity for us to give back to the community that we are living and learning in.
The projects range from helping to prepare dinner in the kitchen, to working on trail maintenance, to going to a local food pantry and assisting the other volunteers there. We are each assigned a project for two weeks on either Tuesday or Thursday and then on Fridays we are assigned a different one.
Today a group of students and faculty are working in the Wallace Center doing a work program called Mop and Clean. For this project they work to mop and sweep all of the floors, as well as to help organize and clean off all of the tables, counters, couches etc. Though this may seem slightly mundane, this job is essential for us to live in a clean and healthy community.
Also in the Wallace Center are a small group of students who are working with the Kitchen Staff to prepare tonights meal. Not only is this an enjoyable because you are able to cook, but students get the opportunity to spend time with our wonderful kitchen staff who they may not otherwise get a chance to know. These students today are helping to do everything from peeling vegetables to making mac and cheese.
Today on the farm a group of 12 students, and the farm staff are hard at work harvesting and processing basil. The basil that they are harvesting today will be turned into pesto next week during a work program, and will then be put into the freezer for use throughout the fall and winter. This time of year the farm has a special focus on harvesting and preserving produce so that it can continue to be used over the coming months.
Each of the different projects that we participate in is unique and important in its own way, and in addition during each of them we always have a great time together.
