A piece of writing from Semester 56 Parent Weekend evening program where a few students chose to share aloud pieces of their writing from the semester.
For those of you who don’t know there are 6 amazing cabins here, Gordy, Orchard, Gillies, Ranch, Binnacle and SoHo. These cabins, have played a surprising and instrumental role in mine and others enjoyment and love for Chewonki, whether that be waking up and walking to the farm for farm chores with your cabin, sitting with a cabin mate at lunch, being in classes with your cabin mate, cheering them on, singing with them in the Flintstones, or the immense joy, at least I feel, when I get to walk back to Orchard at night and know that I am always safe and happy there. These feelings of comfort, love, and affection created by living in these cabins with your fellow students are unique and powerful. I live in the best cabin, Orchard, and tonight I want to read to you all a letter that I wrote to my cabinmates, so that hopefully the guests here today can try and understand some of our feelings about these home-based.
Where do I begin? I’m going to start with a short list of some things I love about Orchard:
- The nightly check-in reminders that our mudroom is a minefield
- The nights when we all stay up and laugh wildly until everything hurts
- The fact that we all knit far too much
- Watching the fire with Stella
- The damn squeaky door
- When Kimberly stands on her bed to make announcements
- Adele’s post meal crazy time
- Dance parties
- The fact that we’re a cult
- Our list of ‘Orchards who have cried in front of the whole cabin’
That is a start, and believe me I could’ve gone on forever. There are too many things to say that I won’t even bother. Now I want to start talking about what I’m grateful for in you all. First, I am unconditionally thankful that you all are in this semester/alive. I had been terrified of making no friends here. I am continuously surprised that I not only have 7 new friends but sisters. Before this I had genuinely lost hope that there were good people who I could be friends with. Thankfully you 7 have continued to prove me wrong. I want you all to know that each and every one of you has gifted me and changed me for the better in countless ways. You 7 have filled my heart and it breaks every time I think that I won’t be with you all forever. You guys have given me more friendship and love than I could have ever imagined possible. I am eternally grateful for each and every one of you. You all deserve the world and absolutely nothing less. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
I don’t think I am or could accurately express how grateful I am to have spent this unforgettable time with you. I love you all more than you will ever know or understand. Thank you for being my family and teaching me and letting me be myself. It has changed me. You guys have changed me. I love you all unconditionally, forever and always.
