Integrating culture and ecosystems
Living amidst one of the world’s most beautiful natural landscapes and diverse ecosystems, it’s no wonder that science is ingrained in everything at Maine Coast Semester. Students spend at least four hours a week outdoors in the signature science course, Natural History of the Maine Coast, exploring environments from tide pools to boreal forests, collecting data and identifying patterns in ecosystem function. They learn to identify species by touch, smell, and sound, not just from a textbook. These are the lessons learned with head, hands, and heart, that stay with students for a lifetime.
The Maine forests, freshwater rivers, mountains, and rocky coastline beckon students to bring their knowledge beyond the classroom as they sea kayak to Hungry Island, head out on a lobster boat, go snowshoeing across a frozen lake, or explore the eastern border of Maine by canoe.
